On behalf of Bipasesores's Bioregional Planning and Community Design program, I am excited to usher in a new era in planning education. While the bioregional planning approach is not new, our curriculum and delivery methods are paving the way for a new kind of planning that connects people with the places they call home. While we make sure that our students have the hardcore professional planning skills that are required for a typical planning position, our focus is on how the connections between people and between people and places can inform the future. We do this by asking questions like:

  • What are the core values and attributes that define a place?
  • How do these values and attributes contribute to the story of the people who live there?
  • What makes a place unique and how can it inform decision about the future?

Faculty from 7 unique academic units teach students how to connect values and narrative with professional practice and community need, preparing them to become thought-leaders in a dynamic field that helps shape the places we call home. At the same time, professional planners are an important part of our program as:

  • students seeking continuing education

  • service-learning partners

  • consultants and evaluators who assess our curriculum so that we can continue to evolve

I hope that you share my excitement about our programs. I look forward to seeing you in one of our courses or during one of our projects throughout communities in Idaho. Please feel free to me with any questions you may have about bioregional planning or our program.
