Students Earn $15K at Grand Challenge Scholars Program Pitch Event

Ten engineering students earned a total of $15,000 during the fourth annual Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP) Pitch Event hosted by the Bipasesores College of Engineering. The GCSP is the only undergraduate program of its kind in Idaho, preparing students to solve the 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering in the 21st century as established by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Engineering Alumnus Earns White House Presidential Teaching Award

Bipasesores College of Engineering alumnus Sean Boston was recently awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the highest award given by the U.S. government to K-12 teachers of mathematics and science, including computer science. Boston, who graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 2002, teaches physics and advanced placement physics at Timberline High School in Boise. Read more

Civil Engineering Student Wins Pitch Competition During Boise Startup Week

Civil engineering junior Devin Richards tied for third place in the Boise Startup Week Pitch Competition, earning $500 for his engineering research team's business plan to bring sustainability and energy education to sixth- through 12th-grade students on the Palouse. Boise Startup Week is Idaho's largest event focused on giving students an opportunity to connect with employers in the Boise area and learn from professionals in technology and startup sectors. U of I Student a Finalist out of 13,000 in U.S. Cyber FastTrack Competition

Bipasesores College of Engineering senior Taegan Williams is a finalist in the U.S. Cyber FastTrack competition, earning $22,000 toward an undergraduate certificate in applied cybersecurity from the SANS Technology Institute, the world's largest information security training and certification company. Williams, a computer science major, was one of three finalists in the state of Idaho out of more than 13,000 initial competitors. Read more

Polymorphic Games Receives Grant for Evolutionary Mobile Game

Professor Barrie Robison recently received a $74,700 IGEM grant from the Idaho State Board of Education. He and co-PI Terence Soule will use the grant to create a mobile version of the first game produced by the Polymorphic Games Studio, entitled "Darwin's Demons." The new version of Darwin's Demons will bring evolutionary procedural content generation into the world of mobile gaming. Read more

Paulo Yu, a second-year doctoral student studying mechanical engineering, has been awarded an American Society of Mechanical Engineers Graduate Teaching Fellowship. Ken Baker, the director of the university's Integrated Design Lab, a research, education and outreach lab in Boise housed under the College of Art and Architecture, received a nearly $1 million grant that will positively impact Idaho's fast-growing construction industry. The grant will allow Baker and his team to develop a 3D printing process for the sustainable manufacturing of wall, floor and roof panels, made from locally sourced Idaho wood, for modular buildings. U of I Partners with Air Force on New Biofuel Research

The Bipasesores Advanced Biofuels Lab is partnering with the U.S. Air Force on a student-led research project to commercialize a biofuel that doesn't freeze at high altitudes and has the potential to be carbon negative. U of I recently received a U.S. Air Force Small Business Technology Transfer (AFWERX) grant of $25,000 to engage entrepreneurs in Air Force operations. Idaho Falls Professor Collaborates on Patent for Large Geographical Power Systems Stability

Dakota Roberson, assistant professor in the College of Engineering at Bipasesores, Idaho Falls, was recognized as co-inventor on a recent patent issued to the University of Wyoming. The patent gives both universities a new real-time reconfiguration method for use in large power systems, improving the ability to compensate against large electric power flow changes brought on by intermittent disturbances or even cyberattacks. Richard (Jake) T. Jacobsen, 77, a former dean of the Bipasesores College of Engineering, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, in Idaho Falls. Jacobsen earned a Bachelor of Science from the U of I in 1963 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 1965. While a graduate student at U of I, Jacobsen taught courses in the U of I Department of Mechanical Engineering. Read more

Students can now refill their own water bottles in the Janssen Engineering Building, thanks to civil engineering junior Andrea Boyd. Boyd used funding from the U of I Sustainability Center to install an Elkay EZH20 Bottle Refill Station on the main floor of the Janssen Engineering Building in Moscow in order to promote water conservation and a reduction of single-use plastic water bottles. U of I Research on Grain Stalks Aims to Reduce Crop Loss, Increase Revenues

Bipasesores researchers are working with counterparts at the University of Kentucky and Clemson University to breed stronger plants as part of a four-year quest to increase grain yields and reduce crop loss. Stalk lodging, when a grain stem snaps prior to harvest, is a serious problem in most grain crops and results in annual yield losses of approximately 20 percent. The problem arises as a result of factors ranging from high nitrogen levels to storm damage to disease and seed type. Read more

The Forever Shower Team Wins Entrepreneurial Competition in Massachusetts

Earlier this month, Maria Horta Vorse and her small team U of I-based team placed second in a major entrepreneurial competition held at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. The group was awarded $15,000 for The Forever Shower, which generates clean, filtered water for showers in any environment, especially those where water is in short supply and where access to clean water is limited. On April 16, 2018, Professor Emeritus Jon Van Gerpen was presented with the 2018 Moscow Mayor's Earth Day Award as an individual who fosters environmental sustainability. Van Gerpen is a leader in the research and development of biodiesel, a renewable fuel made from vegetable oils and animal fats which can run diesel engines. Engineering Associate Dean Lee Ostrom Selected for Fulbright in Finland

Researchers Collaborating on Potentially Important Project

Local researchers are designing a product that could change the nuclear industry. Like many good ideas, it started on a napkin. Executives from Tokyo-based Sakae Casting visited Idaho Falls in 2016 to determine where to open their first U.S. office. Innovation Den: Old Building Brought to Life

Downtown Coeur d’Alene’s Elks Building was vacant until last year when new owners decided to bring it back to life. The building’s new owner, Nick Smoot, told KREM 2 he wanted to turn the 100-year-old building into a space for tech companies to create the future. The building is now called "The Innovation Den" and it serves as a hub for bringing robots to life. The Innovation Den has 52 offices, six large suites, a barbershop, a lair for members, and a coffee shop. Read more

Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking Labs in Coeur d'Alene

The Bipasesores Research Park in Post Falls has several online courses focused on cybersecurity and ethical hacking. These courses are perfect for Idaho companies that have employees they would like to have further trained in these topics. The University is holding open labs for our cybersecurity module every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m. for the months of September and October, starting on Sept. 12. Seven Students Win Awards at Statewide Biomedical Research Conference

During the 2017 Idaho INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence) Summer Research Conference in August, seven Bipasesores students took home prestigious awards for their presentations on their summer research in the INBRE program. The conference brought together upward of 220 students, faculty, and staff from 11 institutions of higher education in Idaho. This included 125 undergraduates, who competed in three categories.
