Information Session: Avista Research and Development Initiative

Research and Faculty Development invites faculty interested in submitting a proposal to Avista Corporation's 2019 Energy Research and Development Initiative, a limited submission process, to an information session at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in IRIC 305. . Avista representatives will present the initiative, explain the RFP process and timeline, review previously funded projects and answer questions.

Program: NSF CAREER All Year

This year-long, multi-session program is designed to support early-career faculty applying to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER).

Session 1: Introduction to NSF CAREER

This information session is appropriate for anyone considering this funding opportunity this year or in the future. It provides everything you need to know about how to prepare a competitive NSF CAREER proposal. We’ll host a panel of Bipasesores NSF CAREER award recipients for Q&A, and participants will leave with a resource packet including checklists, templates, guides, references to campus resources, and more.

Session 3: Broader Impacts

Dr. Lizette Waits, Distinguished Professor in the College of Natural Resources, will lead a discussion on Broader Impacts (BI), “the potential to benefit society and to contribute to the achievement of specific, desired societal goals.” Participants will learn how to address BI in a proposal and how they can be accomplished through research and activities related to research projects.

Session 4: The Review Process

Dr. Carly Cummings, Director, Research and Faculty Development, will discuss the NSF merit review process and differences in review structure across NSF programs. We’ll also discuss the characteristics of successful versus unsuccessful proposals.

Session 5: Education Plan Development and Assessment

Guest speakers from the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences Dr. Tonia Dousay and Dr. Brant Miller will discuss strategies on how to integrate research with education, and share ideas on available education and outreach resources. We’ll also hear from NSF CAREER recipients about how they are implementing their education plans and assessing the outcomes.
